0 Covid-19 Cases for the last 200 days - Taiwan 2020
So on Thursday, October 28, Taiwan had ZERO locally transmitted cases for 200 days. Taiwan is 23 million people.

(AP article- https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/health/taiwan-marks-200-days-without-domestic-covid-19-infection/ )
So this means everyone living in and resident in Taiwan, there was ZERO spread. The last domestic case was April 12. Since April 13, zero cases.
"CDC officials noted the milestone and thanked the public for playing a role, while urging people to continue to wear masks and to wash their hands often." (Associated Press, above link).
So what radical things were the people on Taiwan doing for the last 200 days? Wearing a mask. Washing their hands often.
That's all.
Since the start of the pandemic, Taiwan has recorded 553 cases of covid-19 (remember in South Dakota lately, we have gotten two days of over 1,000 cases, and we are 26 times than 23,000,000 people). Taiwan has had 7 deaths, total. South Dakota has had 403 deaths, so far.
Tourists entering Taiwan has a strict 14 day quarantine when entering the island. It still does record cases of people from another country entering Taiwan and having covid-19.
AARP has a guide (October 2020) that lists US states that have quarantine requirements, when you enter their state:
These are the states requiring quarantine or documented negative test results, if you enter their state:
Alaska, Connecticut, DC, Hawaii, Illinois (Chicago only), Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
https://www.aarp.org/travel/travel-tips/safety/info-2020/state-quarantine-guide.html
That's 16 states, and none of them have infection rates as low as Taiwan.
You can list a whole bunch of excuses-- oh, we're not an island, we're not a country.
But it comes down to 2 simple things:
Almost universal use of masks (to prevent the spread from person to person) and universal hand washing.
Taiwan has it.
We don't.
How is "freedom" not to wear a mask when you compare it to "I want to be free from an infection, that another person may give me by them not wearing a mask" ?
One is the freedom to do anything, even if the person has no symptoms, has not been tested, but may be positive and spreading it to others unknowoingly.
The 2nd one is "responsibility" ( a high desire to find out your status and to protect others from infection, by You wearing a mask) and the "freedom" not to get infected.
Taiwan has succeeded.
South Dakota has failed.
Don't follow scientific recommendations. Ignore countries like Taiwan and New Zealand, who have succeeded. That is the formula for failure, continuing high levels of infection and more deaths.
The Constitution does not protect us from infection by a virus.
Following science rigorously does.
We can get to Taiwan's level of safety- 0 cases from state residents in 200 days--but will take 100% near universal use of masks and washing hands many times a day to reach that level.
Here is an example of a country that is 8 miles from China, and has had 0 cases in 200 days.
We can learn from this. Or not learn.
It is up to us.
If I'm elected as your Senator, I will propose a Corona Virus Action Plan, which will make covid-19 tests, masks, and quarantine spaces free.
Do everything you can to remain safe.
Dream big!
